In the meantime, this is India's fourth bronze medal—the second in a row after Tokyo—and it adds to their record of eight gold medals, three silver medals, and one gold medal from 1980.
India had won seven of their previous 10 games against Spain, who had won three times before. However, after a cagey first half, they found themselves trailing when Miralles fired a penalty stroke in the 18th minute past the "Wall of India" Sreejesh Raveendran, who was playing his 336th and final international game.
Borja Lacalle almost made it two by beating Sreejesh, only to see his shot rebound off the post.
India began to press hard, and Harmanpreet buried a penalty corner with the first half remaining seconds to level the scores.
